Be As You Seem, or Seem As You Are
The humans are the excellent ones among the all creatures, yet there is a crucial reality about the weaknesses of humans. It is up to humankind whether to keep being the excellent creature or turn to be in a lowest level.
In the 95th Surah of Quran (Surah Tin, Verses 4-8) Allah says that:
“..We have certainly created man in the best of stature
Then we return him to the lowest of the low,
Except for those who believe and do righteous deeds, for they will have a reward uninterrupted.
So what yet causes you to deny the Recompense?
Is not Allah the most just of judges?”
What we understand from these verses is that, we, all humans were created in the highest level, yet we may return to the lowest of the low as a result of the path we chose.
As humans, we all have a tendency to make mistakes. The important point is to realize that we are making mistakes and be decisive not to repeat them. Moreover, even though we make mistakes, we shouldn’t lose our moral values that build our characters. Because what make us different from others are our values and the more we live in the lights of our values, the stronger character we have, and our life now and then becomes better.
The question here is how we are going to keep our values not changed or affected from external negative conditions when we take the reality of the weaknesses of the humans into consideration.
I know it is not easy and really hard to sustain our core moral values unchanged.
The first step is, asking yourself the sources of your values. Are they traditionally transferred values? Are they religious values? Or are they legal rules that you have to obey? What about the behaviors and reactions you learned from your friends, which later on became your values?
There is a good quote of Ghandi says that:
Be careful to what you say, it changes to be your thoughts,
Be careful to what you think, it turns to be your emotions,
Be careful to what you feel, it turns to be your behaviors,
Be careful to how you behave, it turns to be your habits,
Be careful to your habits, they turn to be your values,
Be careful to your values, they turn to be your character,
Be careful to your character, it turns to be your destiny.
So, realizing and knowing the main source of our values is the first step. Second step is keeping your values dynamic. What I mean from dynamic is, practicing of what you believe and what you think. For instance, if your values are made of your religious beliefs you may keep;
Praying with your heart continuously,
Fasting with all your body and soul,
Helping poor people without hurting their feelings,
Not lying no matter what,
Being fair even though it is against your benefits,
Raise your voice loudly to any unfair situation and action.
Protecting yourself from evil.
Shortly; by believing Allah, making good things and avoiding from bad things, as in the message given in Surah Asr (103: 1-3):
Indeed, mankind is in loss,
Except for those who have believed and done righteous deeds and advised each other to truth and advised each other to patience.”
We should also never forget the advices of Mevlana Celaladdin-i Rumi,
“Be as you seem or seem as you are”
and the saying of Khalifa Omar Faruk Al Khattab (pbuh)
“If you don’t live as you believe, you start to believe as you are living”
